Problem Behavior

At A Friendly Face we develop behavior reduction programs for children who may or may not have a diagnosis of autism, but  who regularly engage in problem behavior.

We conduct a assessment interview with the parents/school staff and behavioral observations in the  child’s home, school or community setting in an effort to address a wide  variety of disruptive behaviors.  Based on the dat collected a stategy is developped and implemented specifically for each child.  Our therapists teach the child organization and self-management skills, utilizing visual schedules, setting expectations, providing positive  consequences, ignoring “junk” behavior, arranging an environment or breaking  general skills into smaller parts.

Inappropriate behaviors documented thruough interviews, observation and data collection are substituted by teaching  a functional replacement behavior utilizing both pro-active and re-active strategies. Common examples of typical problem behavior include, but are not  limited to:

  • Hitting

  • Difficulty waiting or accepting “no”

  • Kicking

  • Noncompliance

  • Biting

  • Repetitive behaviors

  • Scratching

  • Difficulty with transitioning

  • Urinating in public
